5 ways to get Healthy for Life

Getting healthy for life doesn’t have to be difficult. While it does require a lifestyle transformation, it’s something that can be done in a manner that doesn’t shock your system. When you try to make drastic changes, you may actually set yourself up for failure. Research shows that long lasting change and permanent results are more easily attained when done in small, manageable steps.

At our nutrition counseling center, we recommend that patients start with one or two changes per week as a way of pacing this transformation. Making too many changes at once may be too overwhelming or require too much effort. Below are some habits and behaviors that will help you achieve better health through nutrition and exercise.

1. Start your day right.

Breakfast plays an essential role in getting healthy for life and losing weight. Even if you’re not hungry in the morning, you need to eat a healthy breakfast to rev your metabolism and help to regulate your blood sugar. Keeping your blood sugar levels stable helps to prevent cardiovascular disease, diabetes and strokes. Plus, when you don’t eat breakfast, you’re more likely to overeat later in the day. Focus on a high-fiber meal like steel-cut oatmeal with berries and sliced almonds to help you avoid mid-morning cravings and keep your appetite satiated.

Exercise is perhaps one of the biggest nutrition tips you need to succeed in your weight management, and has a host of other health benefits as well. Building lean muscle makes your body more efficient by boosting your metabolic rate, which results in more calories burned. In addition, it reduces stress, boosts endorphins, improves heart health, bolsters your immune system, lowers blood pressure, decreases the risk of osteoporosis and reduces your LDL cholesterol levels. Start small—try taking a walk at lunch or after dinner, take the stairs whenever possible, and park at the far end of the parking lot at your destinations. Then start riding your bike or walking to your errands that are close by. Once your body adjusts to this new level of activity, find a workout program that appeals to you and commit to it, whether it’s running, hitting the gym, yoga, swimming, Pilates or a sport. In an ideal scenario, you will mix it up and do some cardio, strength training and flexibility workouts.

3. Drink more water!

At our nutrition counseling center, we recommend that clients increase their water intake because burning calories requires ample hydration to function efficiently and dehydration can actually slow down the fat-burning process. When your body burns calories and fat, toxins are created—you need water to flush them out of your system. Plus, when you drink water with a meal, it will help you to feel full sooner, and therefore, eat less.

4. Get better health through nutrition.

Eating healthier foods doesn’t just help you lose weight, it improves your heart health and reduces the risk of disease and illnesses. With each meal, try to eat some good sources of soluble fiber, protein and healthy carbs like antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables or whole grains. 5. Get your ZZZs.

Sleep is necessary for rejuvenating your body and reducing the risk of many diseases. It’s essential for heart health and for getting a good workout. The bottom line is, if you cut your sleep short, your body will suffer. If you’re not getting enough sleep, try going to sleep five minutes earlier for a week, and then another five, and each week increase that number until you’re getting an extra hour of sleep, or whatever your goal is for the ideal amount of sleep.
