For many people, fitness, proper nutrition and getting healthy for life are priorities. The focus on health and fitness is excellent, considering the fact that obesity worldwide has almost doubled since 1980, according to the World Health Organization. The United States comes up repeatedly as one of the most obese nations in the world, and research shows that more than half of American adults do not get the recommended amount of physical activity and only 25 perfect eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. The impetus created by the latest health and fitness crazes that have infiltrated pop culture makes this the perfect time to adopt the habits necessary to be healthy for life.
Whether your goal is to get in better shape overall, to lose weight or do both, there are realistic ways to integrate health and fitness into your everyday routine. Here are three ways recommended by our weight management center for getting healthy for life.
- Meditate. Meditation has been shown to reduce stress and yield significant health benefits, both physical and mental. Research indicates that a regular meditation practice can reduce blood pressure, pain response, stress hormone levels, anxiety and depression. It also boosts energy, improves cognitive function, and positively affects the neural circuits of the brain. Find a method that works for you, and try it at home. Start with something easy, such as five minutes per day, and then gradually work your way up to 10 and 15 minutes. Once you start feeling the benefits, you will be motivated to extend the time you meditate and can find the perfect amount for your own personal practice.
- Make workouts fun. Choose physical activities that you enjoy, instead of forcing yourself to do an exercise regime that you don’t like. If you enjoy the outdoors, then go on walks or runs, take hikes, go cycling and try horseback riding. If you’re a water person, go swimming or surfing for an intense calorie burn. If yoga is your thing, than make that a priority in your daily life. If you love to dance, take some classes and have dance parties at home. Incorporate as much variation as you can to keep it fresh so that you never get bored. If you love type of physical activity you’re doing, then you’ll keep doing it.
- Make over your diet. If you’re trying to lose or maintain weight, then you’re going to have to upgrade your diet. If this is difficult for you, then you may want to seek help from a weight management center. Strive to drink lots of pure water and eat lots of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats and fiber-rich foods so that you get the nutrients your body needs to function properly while achieving an healthy weight.
