Healthy tips for travel

healthy airport foodWhen people seek nutrition counseling, a popular question they ask is how to avoid weight gain when traveling. Executives who travel often for their job complain about eating out all the time, airport food and inconsistent schedules.  For many of us, it’s hard to avoid the trap of eating unhealthy from the minute we get to the airport. Here are some tips for maintaining weight loss and diet management while on the road.

Stay Busy. Flight delayed? Don’t let food become your entertainment. Take a walk through the airport and buy yourself a book or magazine. Only eat if your body truly needs fuel. The temptation of all the comfort food available at the airport is hard to resist, but keep in mind that it’s completely overpriced, typically high in sodium and unhealthy overall. Stash a healthy snack like an apple, banana, almonds or cashews in your carry-on bag. Don’t starve yourself either—your metabolism is already thrown off when you fly across time zones.

Be Aware of Your Weaknesses. Don’t even go inside the fast food restaurants at the airport, especially if you know you won’t choose one of their healthy options. Look for anywhere you can get a salad, and then lose the croutons and get the dressing on the side—choose a balsamic vinaigrette if that’s an option. Make sure to avoid any Chinese-style salads that are packed with the calorie-laden fried noodles that typically accompany them. Members have shared some of the ideas they’ve learned from nutrition counseling, all of which are great options for travel: Greek yogurt parfaits, veggie wraps on whole wheat pitas, or grilled chicken.

Defeat Bloat. As you have hopefully have already learned, hydration is essential for maintaining weight loss and diet management. When you fly, your hydration levels are drained even more than when you’re on the ground. Hydrate before, during and after your flight, and forgo simple carbs on the actual flight. Do not add salt to any of your meals, especially those that are served on the plane, as they are typically already loaded with sodium to keep them preserved. Avoid alcohol at all costs on the plane, as it only dehydrates you further.
