Stay healthy for life at special events

If you’ve got an Oscar party, wedding or other special event coming up, you’re probably so excited to wear that figure flattering dress and have the best time ever. We understand that everyone needs to have some fun, but you can still stay healthy for life and not derail all the hard work you’ve done this far. By laying out a few strategies, you can still have a great time at the party while maintaining the momentum you’ve already built with better health thru nutrition.

Have a healthy, fiber-filled breakfast and a lunch of veggies and protein. Even if you stray from whatever programs for weight management, nutrition advice or diet you’re following at the party, you can still be healthy for life before you go. Plan some strategically timed healthy snacks throughout the day, like an apple with a spoonful of almond butter or Greek yogurt with berries so that you don’t head to the party starving. The last thing you want to do is go to a party on an empty stomach, so time one of those snacks for right before you go. If you do go to the party hungry, chances are that you’ll overdo it.

While you’re spending most of the day practicing better health thru nutrition, make sure to squeeze some activity in as well. Don’t miss that gym session or workout class, and take an extra walk around the block if you can during your lunch hour. In addition, make sure to partake in the dance party if there is one at your event!

If there is a buffet at the party, avoid mindless snacking. Choose a small salad plate instead of a larger plate, and fill it with some veggies. Go ahead and indulge a little, we all know that strictly following programs for weight management and never deviating can ultimately lead to binging, so put some of your favorites on your plate. Yet make sure you only eat the things you truly enjoy. Have your splurge on what you really like and then stop. Eat slowly so that your stomach has enough time to signal your brain that you are full.

If you go too big at the party with either alcohol or food, forgive yourself and move on. Don’t let a few treats translate into a full-blown binge and purge session—and whatever you do, don’t skip meals the next day to try and undo the damage from the night before. Eat healthy and drink lots of water the following day, but more importantly, make sure to enjoy yourself.
